Steam Engines on the Santa Fe Trail

by Ken Humphreys

When driving the secondary roads along the line of the Old Santa Fe Trail through Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico, it is not unusual to see former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe or Colorado & Southern locomotives on display in town squares or parks. As steam was replaced by diesel, engines were often donated to towns and cities along the right ow way. During an August 2009 trip west I spotted four such engines, three Santa Fe 2-6-2 Prairie locomotives and a Colorado & Southern 2-8-0 consolidation. These locomotives are depicted on this page.
